Animal Sanctuary in Catalonia

The active participation of volunteers is sought to collaborate in this wonderful place. You can help in the first animal sanctuary in Spain. Its main objective is to rescue and recover animals victims of exploitation. This objective is also complemented by the promotion of veganism, the fight for the recognition of Animal Rights and the fight against speciesism.

  • Get to know the culture and customs working hand in hand with the local population.
  • Help the different animals in the sanctuary to have a happy life.
  • Bring new ideas for the project and the animals to develop further.
  • Live a unique experience in nature with other volunteers.
  • Get to know life among nature and feel the values of veganism.

What is this program about?

In the sanctuary, each inhabitant is cared for according to their specific physical and psychological needs and has the opportunity to develop as an individual according to their nature, personality and own interests. Here, their rights are respected and they can live safely for the rest of their lives.

The sanctuary project has allowed the rescue, and subsequent accommodation in its facilities, of more than 200 animals that were facing certain death in slaughterhouses or other extermination centers.

In addition, important social outreach and awareness-raising work is carried out, carrying out educational actions aimed at children and adults, which promote the values of respect, justice and equality, extending them to all individuals without distinction of species. To do this, we use specific instruments designed for this purpose, such as talks in educational or occupational centers, campaigns on the street or the publication of our own didactic material.

Your day to day will be in a natural space in contact with a wide variety of animals. Most of the animals are rescued from situations of oppression and abuse, and saved from certain death at the hands of their exploiters. Come, share, help and contribute all your ideas.

How is the day to day and what will I do as a volunteer?

You collaborate 6 days a week, having a day off. Collaboration hours are approximately 8 hours distributed throughout the day, according to needs.

A typical volunteer day starts around 7/7.30 (depending on the time of year) and while some prepare breakfast for everyone, others go out to make sure all the animals are okay and do the first check-up of the day.

Later there is a meeting for breakfast. At breakfast, the tasks of the day are distributed, which can be domestic chores (washing dishes, cleaning the house, preparing food, putting on and tending washing machines) or cleaning tasks in the parks and spaces for animals, construction, maintenance, organization and cleaning the kitchen where the food for the animals is prepared, cleaning the forest, feeding and medical and therapeutic treatments for the animals, or logistical tasks (driving to the shops, collecting donations, etc.). Tasks more related to animals (feeding and medical treatment) are normally assigned to long-term volunteers.

When the food is ready we meet again (usually between 14.00 and 15.00), there is a break until 17.00. At that time the volunteers get going again with the new tasks that have been assigned to each one until the sun goes down. Dinner is done in a more relaxed way: everyone chooses whether to eat it on their own or with the group, and no one is in charge of cooking, everyone eats what suits them.

The daily activities are:

  • Animal care: feeding, supervision of the needs for their well-being, cures and treatments including visits to the vet.
  • Works and maintenance of facilities.
  • Orchard, gardening and forest, including the management of firewood for heating in winter.
