Community Development Volunteer Program

trabajo comunitario en republica dominicana

A program aimed at families, children and young people from low-income communities.

As an organization we know that one way to help is to run a community development volunteer program to support vulnerable communities, which we always strive to provide with greater educational and economic growth.

Through the community development volunteer program in the Dominican Republic, Adventure Volunteer seeks to promote to our children, youth and women the matters of leadership, skill development and constructive use of free time.

As a volunteer you can work on issues of women’s empowerment, sex education, domestic violence prevention or on engagement with young people at risk of social exclusion.

ACTIVITIES TO BE CARRIED OUT

While working with these communities, we learn more and more to understand and see their concerns and needs.  In this way we can contribute to and focus our efforts on these specific needs.  Some of the activities carried out in the community development volunteer program are:

  • Conducting and participating in education and empowerment workshops.
  • Visiting the homes of families in the communities where we work.
  • Working with children and young people who need our skills and knowledge.
  • Support in community building activities in direct contact with community members in low-income neighbourhoods.

Advanced knowledge of Spanish is required for a number of very specialized projects that we develop with the local communities. However, for the rest of the community development projects that our volunteers can take part in a basic level of Spanish is sufficient. You’re not required to be an expert in any field, all that we are looking for are individuals who are empathetic, loving and willing to help others.

We require our volunteers to work a minimum of 4 hours a day, Monday to Friday. Generally, the activities are carried out from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm, and from 2:00 to 5:00 pm.

With regard to clothing requirements – jeans, blouses (with sleeves) and closed shoes are recommended.

In the volunteer apartments, rooms are shared with other volunteers of the same gender.  The apartments have common areas such as kitchen and shared bathrooms, and provide access to free WIFI and washing machine.  Please note that meals are not included in this type of accommodation.  Unlike the apartments, the accommodation in the houses of Dominican families selected by the organization does include meals.
