EMPOWERMENT VOLUNTEERING WITH MOTHERS IN PANAMA

EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMME WITH MOTHERS

The main objective of the volunteer programme with indigenous mothers in Panama is to provide women with work tools and strengthen their roots, so that they can access job opportunities and enrich themselves on a personal level.

Many of these women in the mothers’ empowerment volunteer programme live in vulnerable populations and at social risk. Contributing and supporting these women in creating an environment conducive to change, sustainable human growth and social sensitivity, results in inclusive work through different workshops and the development of new skills.

WHAT WILL I DO IN THE EMPOWERMENT VOLUNTEERING WITH MOTHERS?

  • Support in job training workshops. Workshops are held on basic computer programmes (word, excel, power point), handicrafts, baking and hydroponics.
  • Help in the design workshop. Work is being done to train women in the community to create products for self-employment.
  • Cooking workshop to prepare two traditional dishes from the region where they come from.
  • Help in organising community activities when support is needed to assess progress and interaction.

Remember that empowerment programmes with mothers will have activities according to the number of women or workshops taking place at any given time. If there are fewer women, it is a good sign that they have found their jobs or goals.

WHEN CAN I VOLUNTEER AS A MOTHER EMPOWERMENT VOLUNTEER?

The mother empowerment volunteer project is open all year round and you should arrive in the village of Chame on Saturday or Sunday of each week.

You should be aware that there will be holidays marked on the calendar and there will be some days when there are sudden closures or absenteeism.

  • 8 December, Mother’s Day
  • Martyrs’ Day, which is on 09 January.
  • Carnivals, you should ask which days and month (usually between February and March).
  • Truancy or impromptu closures are part of Panama’s culture.

Arrival days will be Saturday or Sunday, as it makes it easier to join the project on Monday.

There are no pick-ups at the airport, but the local organisation will send you a guide document so that you can get directly to the project in a fast and safe way.

The following Monday you will leave for the area where the community is located.
