Health care in Guatemala

What is this program about?

Have you always wanted to spend part of your time helping others through a volunteer program in Guatemala?

Without a doubt, it is an experience where you can put your knowledge into practice and improve your skills. At the same time, you support communities, children and young people to obtain greater personal and professional growth.

The volunteer participates in the provision of access to basic medical services and medicines. He conducts educational talks for our patients on health care and prevention methods for future diseases, develops and applies new medical treatment programs.

How is the day to day and what will I do as a volunteer?

A typical volunteer day begins with breakfast at the accommodation with all the volunteers. The volunteers head to the project, where they meet with the local coordinator to see what activities are planned for the day.

Throughout the morning each volunteer contributes to the assigned task. A stop is made for lunch and, depending on the needs, they continue with the tasks or have free time.

The volunteer can visit nearby areas in his spare time. In the evening, the group has dinner and prepares for the next day.

Work is from 7:45 am to 4:30 pm with a stop for lunch.

Some of the areas where help is needed are:

  • Medicine.
  • Nursing.
  • Assistant. 
  • Administrator
  • Content Creator 

The main objective is to provide care to the community in order to provide them with medical care and medicines.

Requirements to participate

  • Be over 18 years old (except if you are traveling with your parents).
  • Cover the cost of the program according to weeks.
  • Have a mandatory travel insurance.
  • Respect cultures and religions.
  • Not have a criminal record.
  • Be proactive.
  • Follow the rules of local accommodation and projects.
  • Have an entry and exit ticket to the country in allowed tourist time.
  • Have a valid passport with more than 6 months.
  • Certificate of criminal offenses and Cv.
  • Sanitary training certificate or internship is required.
  • Fluent Spanish.

Where will I be and when do I have to arrive?

Where will the accommodation be?

The airport you must arrive at is La Aurora International Airport. Once you arrive, the local coordinators will tell you how to get to the project.

Once you arrive you will stay at the volunteer’s house, located in Totonicapán. The accommodation is in the same medical project, so you do not have to travel to go to the program. The rooms are generally bunk-bed style (bedding provided for the volunteer) to be shared between volunteers. 

The rooms are shared by volunteers. The house has common areas that can be used by volunteers and also provides access to a laundry room. Wifi is not available.

Dates and method of arrival

Open throughout the year, with hours from Monday to Friday. From 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. approximately with time for lunch.

You must get to the project on your own, the local coordinators will tell you how to get there. It is advisable to arrive during the weekend to carry out an induction during the weekend and join on Monday.

How long can I go?

You can be in the project from 3 weeks to 12 weeks.  

How do I sign up?

To sign up is very simple, you only have to follow 5 very important steps, the first thing is once you have read everything that is included and not included and the costs that you have in the country tab.

  1. Fill out this form with the dates you want.
  2. You receive an official confirmation of place.
  3. Make a 1st contribution of register for the program.
  4. You make a video call with the coordinator to better prepare your arrival.
  5. Sign the international volunteer agreement and complete the rest of the financial contribution as indicated by your coordinator.

What can I see during the weekend?

Guatemala is an ideal destination to find tourist activities of all kinds. Do not forget to get lost in its most picturesque streets, discover the local gastronomy and its people. Some of the places that you cannot miss are:

  • ANTIGUA GUATEMALA

Considered one of the best kept cities in Central America and one of the most attractive places in Sacatepéquez and the most important in Guatemala. You can appreciate the architecture of the cathedrals, temples and streets that make you feel that time has not passed.

If you are a photography lover and want to get to know Antigua Guatemala in a unique way, be sure to take a walk to Cerro de la Cruz, named after the cross that is on the hill, which gives you a view the only one in town.

  • TIKAL NATIONAL PARK

Touring the Tikal National Park is like taking a trip back in time. It is considered one of the largest cities of the Mayan civilization. Many visitors make the tour in one day, to immerse themselves in this immense and attractive city that hides unique mysteries.

  • VOLCANO DE AGUA

One of the most visited tourist destinations in Guatemala. The walks are carried out through places surrounded by forests. The view from its top is impressive, due to its nature and unique landscapes.
