Mapuche families in Chile

Volunteering with Mapuche families

Throughout the year, the families have a lot of work to do in the field and often cannot cope. Therefore, the support of the volunteers through volunteering with Mapuche families is necessary for these families.

On the other hand, we understand the motivation and interest that the volunteers show in learning about the Mapuche culture and we believe that this creates a space for mutual learning and cooperation on both sides.

OBJECTIVE

Generate an instance of learning and collaboration between the volunteers in Chile, the families and the Mapuche community where the volunteer lives during his/her volunteer work.

WHAT WILL I DO AS A VOLUNTEER?

The tasks that are carried out in the volunteer work with Mapuche families during your stay in Chile are:

  • Work and care of the family garden assigned to you.
  • Care and feeding of animals such as: sheep, pigs, chickens, turkeys, among others.
  • Production of preserves
  • Chopping and sorting firewood
  • Helping in the kitchen, cooking, washing and tidying up.
  • Helping to collect fruits of the forest at harvest time.

It is important to bear in mind that some of the activities and tasks to be carried out are always subject to weather conditions, the interest and capacity of the volunteer and the needs of each family.

Requirements to volunteer with a Mapuche family

Having these qualities makes your volunteer experience in Chile a positive one. If you don’t like the programme or find it too hard for you, it could mean that you will have to give up and that would be a shame.

We recommend you to contact the Adventure Volunteer team if you have any doubts, we will always be available for you.

These are some of the qualities you should have when volunteering in the Mapuche families project in Chile:

  • Be of legal age
  • Work as part of a team
  • Adaptation and respect for Mapuche culture
  • Ability and flexibility
  • Empathy
  • Respect the schedules agreed with the families

Days and dates for volunteering

Arrivals

  • The project is open all year round.
  • We recommend arriving on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday at the project.

WHERE WILL I BE AND WHAT WILL MY SCHEDULE BE?

The working hours depend on each family. In general, the volunteer works in the morning for about 5 hours. In the afternoon the volunteer is free, in addition to his or her day off during the week. This timetable is flexible and can always be adapted by mutual agreement between the family and the volunteer.

  • The volunteers work directly in the house of the Mapuche family where they collaborate.
  • The families live in rural areas relatively close to the centre of Kurarewe, where they can be reached on foot (approx. 30 min.), there are also buses but with low frequency (1 or 2 per day).

Once you are part of the Adventure Volunteer Chile team, Catalina Marti will be your project coordinator and will give you the induction and information about the place and the family. She will also tell you about the general activities that you will do during your volunteering with your assigned Mapuche family.
