SCHOOL AID VOLUNTEERING IN PANAMA

SCHOOL AID VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME

With the work of school revision and support carried out in certain areas of the indigenous community, through the school support programme in Panama, it has been possible to detect that they are losing their attachment to their roots, affecting their social, psychological and personal level.

In the search for a solution to this situation, we have observed that group interaction with people of other customs and nationalities, during the learning of their language, motivates them and leads them to appreciate their customs and language.

Through the volunteer programme in Panama, we see the opportunity to strengthen their academic skills with comprehensive literacy classes, school revision and cultural empowerment.

It is important for each child to know that their culture and language is part of their identity, and we achieve this through volunteering to help them in school.

WHAT ARE THE OBJECTIVES OF SCHOOL AID VOLUNTEERING?

  • Empowerment of families, school revision for children and adults from indigenous communities, with work and growth tools, strengthening their roots, preserving their culture, language and improving their quality of life.

WHAT WILL I DO IN THE SCHOOL AID VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME?

We are currently verifying the new areas of action where we will collaborate with the youngest members of the closest communities of Darien in the school aid volunteer programme.

  • Training and sensitisation of mothers in the communities to influence the improvement of hygiene, nutrition and family empowerment.
  • Help in local multi-grade schools giving reinforcement and revision to young people and support to the teacher and the organisation, generating school gardens, awareness raising, support in teaching and training other mothers to support the teachers and in the school canteens.
  • Summer school one week in January where children from the communities come to the centre for a day of awareness-raising and teaching games.
  • Replication of vegetable garden and farm in vulnerable families to generate micro-employment and access to a family income through the cultivation of plants (pigeon pea, banana, pineapple, papaya…) and livestock to then be able to sell them. A basic model is created in the centre, which is then replicated on a small scale in the home of a family in the community according to their space resources.

WHAT IS THE ACCOMMODATION LIKE IN SCHOOL AID VOLUNTEERING?

It is a very large space of nature where they also work on livestock and planting, as well as being the organisational headquarters to go out to the communities.

In this accommodation there are different hangars, where one of them is for volunteers with bunk beds.

In your accommodation you have the option to use the kitchen to prepare your own food.
