Sea turtle conservation in Greece

Sea turtles are in danger of extinction and it is necessary to preserve the species to conserve marine biodiversity.

What is this program about?

The volunteer will be on the island of Argostoli, the capital city of the Greek island of Kefalonia. It is located 100 km west of Patras and has a population of approximately 10,000.

The experience in volunteering with sea turtles will be very complete in every way, since you will live with volunteers from all over the world, you will get to know different cultures and customs, while you are arriving with the local team learning about the fauna and flora, and above all having a very important role in the conservation of biodiversity protecting sea turtles and their environment.

How is the day to day and what will I do as a volunteer?

The day to day of the volunteer consists of a collaboration of approximately 5 or 6 hours, distributed during the morning, afternoon or night according to needs. The volunteer has two free days that he will coordinate with the local coordinators.

A typical volunteer day begins with breakfast at the accommodation. At the end, the volunteers go to the project, where they meet with the local coordinator to organize the activities planned for the day.

Throughout the morning each volunteer contributes to the assigned tasks. A stop is made for lunch and, depending on the needs, they continue with the tasks or have free time.

The volunteer can visit nearby areas in his free time. In the evening, the volunteer has dinner and prepares for the next day or for tasks in the evening.

Some of the tasks carried out by volunteers are:

  • Beach conservation.
  • Facilities maintenance.

  • Protection of eggs and nests.
  • I work in a nursery.
  • Births.
  • Night patrol.
  • Observations of mating of sea turtles.
  • Observation of photographic identification techniques.
  • Participation in drone surveys of the port and feeding areas (May).
  • Beach profile studies.
  • Plastic pollution assessment.
  • Sea turtle tagging (May to end of June).
  • Rescues of injured sea turtles.
  • Record of behavioral observations.
  • Monitoring of sea turtles in the port.
  • Nesting surveys on the beach early in the morning.
  • Nest protection and relocation if necessary.

Requirements to participate

  • Be over 18 years old (except if you are traveling with your parents).
  • Cover the cost of the program according to weeks.
  • Have a mandatory travel insurance.
  • Respect cultures and religions.
  • Not have a criminal record.
  • Be proactive.
  • Follow the rules of local accommodation and projects.
  • Have an entry and exit ticket to the country in allowed tourist time.
  • Have a valid passport with more than 6 months.
  • Fluent English.

Where will I be and when do I have to arrive?

Where will the accommodation be?

You can get there in the following ways:

  • Option 1: Direct flight to Kefalonia (EFL) 
  • Option 2: Flight to Athens (ATH) and then 1 hour flight to Kefalonia from Athens 
  • Option 3: Flight to Athens (ATH) and then bus/ferry to Kefalonia 7 hour bus/ferry journey to Kefalonia from Athens

To be welcomed at the airport you must arrive in Kefalonia on Sunday. In case of arriving at another time, the local coordinator will tell you how to get there. 

Once you arrive you will stay at the volunteer’s house, located in Argostoli. The volunteer house is an apartment with private rooms, the apartment has volunteers of the same sex. You will share the bathrooms and common areas. The house has Wi-Fi, and has bedding for each volunteer.

To sign up is very simple, you only have to follow 5 very important steps, the first thing is once you have read everything that is included and not included and the costs that you have in the country tab.

  1. Fill out this form with the dates you want.
  2. You receive an official confirmation of place.
  3. Make a 1st contribution to register for the program.
  4. You make a video call with the coordinator to better prepare your arrival.
  5. Sign the international volunteer agreement and complete the rest of the payment as your coordinator tells you.
