Teaching and school with children in Senegal

The disabled in Senegal are hidden out of shame, inWith this project we intend to give opportunities to these children. We get them to leave home and develop their abilities to the maximum. There are approximately 30 children.

What is this program about?

In this program you will care for children with disabilities in the community.

The volunteer will be part of the ‘Very Special Classroom’, where they can help develop the skills of children with needs special as: blindness, deafness, autism, Asperger, Down syndrome and paralysis.

Through the teaching project with special educational needs, we work through didactic activities and workshops, music, dance, art, and theater classes, among others.

Many of these children and young people also receive speech therapy, physical therapy, and support and assistance with emotional problems.

How is the day to day and what will I do as a volunteer?

The day to day of the volunteer consists of a collaboration from Monday to Friday.

A typical volunteer day begins with breakfast at the accommodation with all the volunteers. At the end, the volunteers go to the project, where they meet with the local coordinator to organize the activities planned for the day.

Throughout the morning each volunteer contributes to the assigned tasks. A stop is made for lunch and, depending on the needs, they continue with the tasks or have free time.

The volunteer can visit nearby areas in his spare time. In the evening, the group has dinner and prepares for the next day.

Some of the activities that you will carry out during your volunteering are:

  • Monitoring and accompaniment in daily routines.
  • Support in the classroom.
  • Collaboration in early, visual, sensory and/or auditory stimulation.
  • Participation in outdoor activities.
  • Assistance in feeding some students.
  • Creation of activities and material for classes.

Requirements to participate

  • Be over 18 years old (except if you are traveling with your parents).
  • Cover the cost of the program according to weeks.
  • Have a mandatory travel insurance.
  • Respect cultures and religions.
  • Not have a criminal record.
  • Be proactive.
  • Follow the rules of local accommodation and projects.
  • Have an entry and exit ticket to the country in allowed tourist time.
  • Have a valid passport with more than 6 months.
  • Certificate of sexual crimes.
  • Basic English.

Where will I be and when do I have to arrive?

Where will the accommodation be?

The airport you need to get to will be communicated to you according to the area you choose to volunteer in. We will tell you if you need to take an internal flight or which airport to arrive at. You should arrive on Fridays or Saturdays.

Once you arrive you will stay in the volunteer’s house, it is a charming town and a very pleasant community.

The volunteer’s house has rooms that you will share with other volunteers, you will also share the bathrooms (flush toilets and tank showers)  and common areas. The house has Wi-Fi (sometimes there may not be) and has bedding and towels for each volunteer.

Dates and method of arrival

The project is open throughout the year. It is advisable to arrive during Friday or Saturday, since the project starts every Monday where your presentation will take place.

How long can I go?

You can be in the project from 2 weeks up to 12 weeks.

How do I sign up?

To sign up is very simple, you only have to follow 5 very important steps, the first thing is once you have read everything that is included and not included and the costs that you have in the country tab.

  2. You receive an official confirmation of place.
  3. Make a 1st contribution of enrollment to the program.
  4. You make a video call with the coordinator to better prepare your arrival.
  5. Sign the international volunteer agreement and complete the rest of the financial contribution as indicated by your coordinator.

PINK LAKE

This lake is located north of the Senegalese peninsula, its pink color is due to the high level of salinity in the water and it can be seen as strong in color in dry season.

LOMPOUL DESERT

Found in the Sahel region, between Dakar and Saint-Louis, where you can take a tour of the dunes on a dromedary and at night have a nice campfire.

DELTA SALOUM NATIONAL PARK

A World Heritage Site since 2011, it is the second largest natural park in Senegal, where you can see from magnificent mangroves to huge dunes and a wide variety of fauna.
