Teaching program in India

ARE YOU WILLING TO VOLUNTEER TO SUPPORT AND HELP OTHER PEOPLE WHO NEED IT?

Do you want to join an international volunteer program, but don’t know which country to choose? It could be India.  Although this country has made many improvements in the education sector, half of its population still lives in situations of poverty and social inequalities. The access to education for some children and youth is limited, mainly in the areas called “slums”, which is where socially excluded families live.

The Teaching volunteer program  in India is developed in two different environments. Some projects take place in public or private schools in rural areas, where access to education and teaching is low. The other place where classes are held are the very poor neighborhoods of Jaipur, known as “slums”. 10 to 15 children attend a class at a time.

YOUR ROLE AS A VOLUNTEER

Your participation and support is vital for the development of the activities carried out in the teaching program. The work of the volunteer consists of supporting and facilitating the learning of the children by carrying out the following activities:

  • Giving Math and English classes
  • Assisting the teachers
  • Helping the children and young people to further develop their communication skills
  • Organizing classes of drawing, painting, music or dance
  • Creating engaging didactic school material for the classes and workshops

SCHEDULE AND PLACE OF WORK

The working schedule is from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm, Monday to Friday. Volunteers usually work between 20 to 35 hours a week.

The educational centers are open all year.

ACCOMMODATION AND MEALS

Volunteers stay in houses selected by Adventure Volunteer that are located in central areas and in the outskirts of Jaipur. The houses provide access to Wi-Fi; kitchen, living room, dining room and a small terrace, which volunteers can use. You will share rooms with other volunteers of the same gender (approximately four volunteers per room).

In the accommodation, you will receive three meals a day during your stay in the program.

  • Breakfast: Starts from 8:00am and usually includes coffee, tea, milk, bread, jam, butter and eggs.
  • Lunch: Is usually served from 12:00pm to 2:00pm and includes typical Indian meals.
  • Dinner: Is usually served after 7:00pm and includes meals similar to lunch.

The tap water in the house is potable, however, it’s also recommended that volunteers buy bottled water to drink.  In stores, it costs approximately Rs. 20 (€ 0.25) per bottle.

A very important fact: In India, toilet paper is not usually used, so volunteers have to buy and carry their own. You can find it in supermarkets.
