How to include the experience of the volunteer in you curriculum?

We live in a competitive world, where those interested in a job, are increasingly prepared, so any detail, however small it can make a difference when you are selected for a job job. And one of those details may be the experience of your  volunteering, maybe it is not a decisive factor, but it will help you in the selection process.


When you have decided to volunteer in your community or an international volunteer, you do it with the purpose of helping others, giving your best, dedicating part of your time in social actions that make a difference. However, many volunteers do not include this experience lived in their curriculum.


Being an unpaid action, if not voluntary, can generate confusion. It is to know that we cannot consider volunteering as 100% work experience, but what we can do is consider it an experience that can help us in the development of our skills and knowledge, to the point of taking this learning to the job .

Every day your volunteer experience is more valued, since it shows in you a series of values ​​that companies are looking for today and this is one of the reasons why you should not leave your volunteer experience out of your curriculum.

In addition, if you are one of those young graduates, who only have the experience of the practices carried out during your studies or for jobs that are not related to your sector, putting your experience as a volunteer makes a difference.

Volunteering can bring many things on a personal and professional level, but the most important thing is the availability and solidarity that is put in helping others.

Volunteering can reflect those skills and knowledge of a person we often do not see, as well as reflect the following:

  • What are you, a committed person.
  • That you care about the situation of other people.
  • You use your skills in a positive way.


If you have decided to include your volunteer experience in your resume, you just need to know where and how to put it. In general, it is not advisable to combine professional experience with volunteering. Since it is not the same the

experience of a newly graduated person with one who has been on a career path. Therefore, it is recommended to put it as a sub-section within the professional experience. Also keep in mind that some templates where you create your resume may already be predefined and there are others that ask that experiences be placed as a professional experience.

In the case that you have made several volunteers, select the most significant ones. 

In the section where you mention the experience of volunteering, you must place the following information:

  • NGO / Company with which you performed the volunteer
  • Functions or activities
  • Sector or type of project
  • Time spent
  • Destination / country where you did the volunteer
  • Mention some references, for example of some coordinator.
  • Tell some difficulties you had and how you solved it.

Remember each resume is different and may vary. Some will ask for more information, others less, but the important thing is that you tell your experience in an authentic and unique way as you lived it. To do this consider the following:

  • The activities in which you participated and time.
  • Highlights acquired skills.
  • Add reference data
