Volunteering in Cambodia

VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS IN CAMBODIA

One of the ways to get to know a country is to volunteer, but not just any volunteer, but a different volunteer experience; where you can know, live and feel the true essence of that place and its people. Do you dare to know these beautiful volunteer programs in Cambodia and live in their communities?

These volunteer initiatives in Cambodia allow you to dedicate your time to such important social causes as the ones you will discover below.

ENGLISH TEACHING IN CAMBODIA

Teach English to students attending our school in remote Cambodia! You will find yourself in a beautiful village, where you will teach English to the poorest children. Our local teachers will help you prepare the classes and meet monthly exam cycles. You will be able to teach alone or together with other volunteers like you.

Each day, more than 400 children come to our school to attend one of the two sessions offered. They are all eager to learn and greatly appreciate those who can help them in their educational development.

The school is located in a community that is very involved for its social development. In 2013 the school was opened, this offers a free opportunity for those who cannot afford the costs to study and improve themselves. Students attend an ordinary public school four hours a day, where they do not have the opportunity to learn much English.

The public school shifts are divided into a morning and an afternoon group, which gives the children the opportunity to come to our school during their free time (i.e. the morning group can attend our afternoon shift and vice versa).

The children come of their own free will and really enjoy their time here.

Teaching takes place in a traditional classroom. However, we are very flexible and encourage you to be creative in your lesson planning.

Your main duties will be:

  • Prepare English lesson plans.
  • Teach English.
  • Administering weekly progress tests.

In addition to passing on your knowledge of English, you will also be able to share some basic hygiene and sanitation routines, as well as your own experiences and cultural background.

The project starts every Monday where your presentation will take place. So it is recommended that you arrive on Saturday between 6:00 am and 4:00 pm to be picked up.

You will collaborate from Monday to Friday for approximately 5 hours distributed during the morning and afternoon, covering both teaching shifts.

The project is open all year round except for the following dates when there are holidays and daily activities may be affected (ask for modifications on those dates):

  • April: from 9 to 24.
  • September: from 24 to 2 October.
  • Minimum age: 18

  • Minimum English level: Intermediate (B2)
  • Copy of resume required: No
  • Qualifications required: None, crime clearance certificate requested

Experiences of our volunteers

Alex’s story

I am feeling like I was a part of the Camboia community. As I spent 8 weeks in the program., I was very familiar with the local team, the rotation of participants, and unexpectedly also the people.

Being greeted with smiles from the school children every day, having bars know my drink order, even the morning market butcher knowing what cut of pork I wanted, often without being able to understand one another.

This familiarity and feeling like I was part of the community was amazing. For first-timers, don’t think too hard about the outcome of your time spent here.

I think we all do something like this for different reasons and there will be many surprises along the way. But the certain outcome is a new perspective, whether of yourself, your home country, or the place you served.

Offering your time and skills without any expectation of anything back is the most selfless thing you can ever do and with this, no matter what, you will grow positively as a person.

Thank you Camboia!

TOURIST SITES

Since weekends are free, you can go wherever you want. Here we tell you a little about this wonderful destination.

Cambodia is perhaps best known for its monumental temples, especially Angkor Wat, a finalist in the election of the 7 new wonders of the world in 2006. It is undoubtedly a country of incredible beauty, dotted with these temples, fertile rice paddies and a rich and interesting history. So it’s no wonder that Cambodia has taken a firm foothold on the tourist map. After being a protectorate of France for nearly 100 years, the country gained its independence in 1953. After that, Cambodia experienced years of civil war, turmoil and political corruption, as well as suffering the consequences of its involvement in the Vietnam War.

Despite this dark history, Cambodia is an extraordinary country and has prevailed thanks to what has been described as the unwavering spirit of the Cambodian people. Its people are known for their kindness and smiles.

Buddhism is an important aspect of Khmer culture and is practiced by 95% of the Cambodian population.

Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat, sometimes also spelled Angkor Vat, is the largest Hindu temple and also the best preserved of those that make up the Angkor settlement. It is considered the largest religious structure ever built, and one of the most important archaeological treasures in the world.

Siem Reap City

Siem Riep is a resort town in northwestern Cambodia and is the gateway to the ruins of Angkor, the seat of the Khmer kingdom between the 9th and 15th centuries. The extensive Angkor complex with intricate stone buildings includes the preserved main temple Angkor Wat, which is featured on the Cambodian flag.

Temple of Bayón

As travelers approach the Bayon Temple they are struck by the sight of its 54 towers, which rise majestically showing the serene faces that are carved into their sides. In total, up to 200 faces are engraved in stone in the temple. If we add to this that the jungle has taken over part of the sanctuary and the vines and lianas cover part of these serene faces, we have a perfect panoramic view of the complex.
