SCHOOL TEACHING AND TUTORING IN NAIROBI

We seek to empower and develop all the skills and knowledge of children and young people from underprivileged communities in Kenya.

The program aims to improve the quality of life of socially disadvantaged people, mainly targeting the most vulnerable children. We hope that our volunteers will contribute new ideas and teaching methodologies and that these will motivate our children and young people to continue learning and forge a better future for themselves.

We carry out reinforcement and teaching tasks in all areas such as; mathematics, English, social sciences and natural sciences, sports, music, etc.

Monday to Friday, 3 or 4 hours, with one hour for lunch. The program is open all year round.

We recommend arriving on Sunday for induction to the program on Monday.

EMPOWERMENT WITH WOMEN AND ADOLESCENTS IN NAIROBI

This project addresses the problems of many women in Kenya through awareness raising and education. Needs are analyzed and acted upon.

One of the ways we have found to address the problems of many women in Kenya is through sensitization and education through the Young Mothers Empowerment Volunteer Program. In trainings and talks we emphasize topics such as: domestic violence, healthy eating, diseases and drugs.

Open all year round. Monday to Friday, 3 or 4 hours, with one hour for lunch. The program is open all year round.

CHILD CARE IN ORPHANAGE IN DIANI

The volunteer will work with children where the main objective is to provide care, education and pedagogical assistance.

The volunteer will provide support to the teachers and supplementary assistance. Your main objective should be to practice English with the children through the use of creative expressions; stories, poems, songs and games. As well as instilling values and teachings.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAM AT DIANI

You will be able to experience local Kenyan farming practices, help the farming community by giving more hands and effort, as well as experience cultural immersion and engagement with the local community

You will be able to enjoy Kenya by helping the community on their farms and grounds.

Your tasks may include: mowing and cleaning the grassy areas around the farms, working in the tea plantations, planting, watering, harvesting fruits and vegetables, helping with livestock care, and addressing various community needs.

Open all year round, with a schedule of approximately 3 or 4 hours in the morning.

Arrival day and time is Friday. You will be picked up by local staff, and then transferred to the lodge.

The volunteer will share with doctors and other health care personnel in a small health care center or district hospital (depending on the needs at the time). Your level of experience, skill and ability will determine what tasks you will be assigned.

TEACHING AND SCHOOL REINFORCEMENT INCLUDING CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS AT DIANI

In this program we teach and reinforce schooling, as well as children with physical challenges, cerebral palsy, autism and the mentally ill, where they are taught life skills, concentration, coordination, basic writing, English and mathematics.

To be part of the volunteering in Kenya, no specific training is necessary, it is only required:

WHERE WILL I BE VOLUNTEERING IN KENYA?

The projects take place in Nairobi, Gatanga or Diani, depending on the project selected.

  • The projects are located within walking distance of where the volunteers are staying
  • There is no need to use public transport to go to the projects, as you can walk to the projects.

WHEN CAN I VOLUNTEER IN KENYA?

The programs are open all year round. They only close their doors for the Christmas holidays. See specifications of schedules and arrival dates in each program,

Regular updates are made to ensure that the information is as accurate as possible, even so, since we work in countries with scarce resources, it can always differ a little, especially in July and August.

The steps to follow to register are as follows:

  • Fill out the form to reserve your volunteering.
  • Wait for our confirmation of availability.
  • Make a 1st donation for the registration to the Adventure Volunteer association.
  • You will receive an email with the volunteer agreement to be completed by you.
  • You will return to us by email all the requested information and you will be able to purchase the flight.
  • A few weeks before you start you will receive information from the local organization.
  • Now you only have to pack your suitcase, you have a whole team that will make everything easier for you and you will be in contact at all times, so you don’t have to worry.

REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS

To be part of the volunteer programs in Sri Lanka, it is not necessary any specific training and it is only required:

  • To be of legal age (possibility minor with guardian or parents).
  • To be a participative and committed person.
  • Be respectful of people, culture and customs.
  • To know how to adapt and work in a team.
  • Criminal record certificate for social work.
  • Sign cooperation agreement and interview with our team.
  • Appropriate clothing for the destination.

ACCOMMODATION FOR YOUR VOLUNTEER WORK IN KENYA

Your accommodation may be with a Kenyan host family or in a volunteer’s home, depending on your needs. All homes selected by the local organization have the basic amenities that a lower-middle status family in Kenya generally has.

  • Bathroom (attached to the house) is flush wc (Turkish type).

WHAT WILL THE ARRIVAL AT THE DESTINATION BE LIKE?

You will be welcomed by the local organization at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, located 15 km from the center of Nairobi, where you will be met by the local coordinator responsible for the project, or at Mombasa International Airport (MBA), depending on your selected volunteer program.

Depending on the time you arrive in Kenya, you will be given an orientation of the house, the project and the activities to be carried out. At that time the coordinator responsible for the project or area where you will be assigned will tell you the norms, rules and procedures to follow during your volunteering.

You will be picked up if you arrive on the days and times when pick up is included, otherwise there will be a cost or the coordinator can tell you how to get there.

VISA IN KENYA

To enter Kenya it is mandatory to have a visa, whether for tourism or business. They have a duration of 3 months. You can apply for the visa online before traveling or at the airport in Nairobi, Mombasa or at the main land border posts in Kenya. But we recommend that you apply before you travel. For which we recommend you to call the Kenyan embassy in your country.

  • Depending on the country of origin a visa is not required for stays between 30 and 90 days. In this case it is necessary.
  • Passport in order and with a validity of at least six months.
  • Economic solvency. Validate at the Kenyan Embassy in your country.
  • Round trip ticket.

SECURITY IN KENYA

As in any country, you must take certain precautions and know how to handle yourself in certain zones and areas.

In general, tourist areas are safe, but we still recommend you to take these details into account:

  • Notify your coordinator, in case you are going on an excursion.
  • Have your coordinator’s phone number and the address where you are staying.
  • Avoid giving out information about where you are staying, the project and your fellow volunteers.
  • Do not bring anyone who is not from the organization to the volunteer’s house.
  • Avoid risky areas in every place you visit.
  • Travel frugally in your daily transfers and excursions.
  • Avoid drawing attention to yourself with jewelry and accessories.
  • If possible, avoid taking out your cell phone in public places.
  • Try to use the country’s safe transportation services.
  • Avoid walking alone on unfamiliar streets.
  • Never take someone you do not know in an unfamiliar vehicle or in your own vehicle.
  • Do not drink any beverage whose origin you do not know.

Also in Kenya you can use UBER, it is very economical and safe.

The financial contribution is divided into two parts:

  • The registration that you will give as a donation to the Adventure Volunteer association. This contribution has a tax benefit of 80% that you will be able to deduct in your income tax return.
  • The remaining part of the cost of the program will go to the partner organization that we will send on your behalf as a substitute or you can deliver it directly to the project.

HOW TO BOOK MY VOLUNTEERING IN KENYA?

STEP 1

Once you fill out the program form, we will verify everything and confirm your place within 24 hours.

STEP 2

The registration fee must be paid within 7 days, then your place will be guaranteed 1 month before the payment of the programme.

SETEP 3

We send you the mandatory insurance and the international volunteer agreement.

CLIMATE

  • December to March and June to October are ideal dates for volunteering in Kenya and being able to go on a safari.
  • January and February are the driest months.
  • March to May are rainy seasons.

Temperatures are more or less constant throughout the year, around 26°C. It should also be noted that although it is hot during the day, the nights are usually cool. It is advisable to wear a sweatshirt or a light coat.

CURRENCY

The currency used in Kenya is the Kenyan Shilling (KES).

The dollar is the reference currency (they don’t typically accept dollars issued prior to 2000). The euro is also generally accepted, although to a lesser extent.

If you don’t go on excursions during your stay in Kenya, you can expect to spend about 2000 shillings per week (approximately 18 euros).

A safari contracted with a local agency can cost you between 325 to 500 euros, with transportation, a guide, 3 meals and 2 nights included in the price.

A day trip to Nairobi, visiting all the centers such as museums, elephant orphanages, giraffe centers, or the house of Memories in Africa is around €80.

  • It is recommended to carry cash in local currency at all times for those small purchases or quick transportation.
  • One thing you should know is that in Kenya tips are usually given, more if the service provided is very good. We therefore recommend that you always carry 100 shillings, the equivalent to 1 euro.

You have the option of taking money from your destination country or withdrawing money from ATMs in Kenya. There are some ATMs that allow you to withdraw in dollars and live well if you do a safari. You must also take into account the limit that you can take out of an ATM per day, to simply approach home to change money, just evaluate if it suits you change.

The most popular airlines you can find to travel to Kenya are: Emirates, Qatar Airways, Iberia, KLM, Lufthansa or Turkish Airlines.

THE GREAT MIGRATION

The best months to travel for your volunteer program in Kenya are between June and October.

What to consider for a visa in Kenya?

HOW CAN I GET DURING THE VOLUNTEERING IN KENYA?

You can go from one place to another in different means of transport, the safest and most recommended is the UBER, is economical and safe. also if you are with a local person you can use local transport (buses) alone is not recommended.

If you want to go from Nairobi to Mombasa, the train option is very good and economical. It leaves only in two schedules, in the morning around 8:00 a.m. and in the afternoons around 21:00 hours (check the schedules).

WHICH ARE THE PLACES TO KNOW IN VOLUNTEERING IN KENYA?

The places you can see in Nairobi are: the elephant orphanage, the giraffe centre, the national museum and Karen Blixen’s house. The 3 first places you can see them in a day, of course, if you go trade to the tour start by the elephants that only have one hour a day (11:00 to 12:00).
