In this project you can distribute the tasks according to two programmes, i.e. you can dedicate more time to one of them, depending on your skills and preferences.

In the awareness and inclusion programme, awareness talks are given to children, giving importance to the values of animals, as well as teaching workshops.

This programme has the task of generating awareness of inclusion in society, so we will carry out campaigns in primary, secondary and technical schools, as well as in indigenous communities, with the aim of reaching children, adolescents, parents, and teachers, with the design and delivery of material, as well as a follow-up to them to know the impact.

On the other hand, it is also possible to participate in therapeutic tasks of support with animals for vulnerable groups, such as adolescents or children with disabilities, and in correctional institutions, homes, etc.

In the shelter management programme, we take care of street and abandoned dogs and cats, where your tasks will be; walking dogs in the forest in groups of 4 per walk, buying natural food at the market, cooking and feeding the 32 dogs and 16 cats, giving food and water to street dogs, cleaning the spaces, taking care of our disabled dog.

SEA TURTLE CONSERVATION

You will be able to collaborate in the Pacific of Mexico helping to preserve the species of sea turtles in two different beach areas. It can be either in group mode with dates indicated or individually choosing your own starting dates.

This volunteering is for you if you are looking to regenerate the environment, always with an open mind and if you are willing to live in a very different environment and with very different people.

This project combines conservation, learning, leisure and adventure in a paradisiacal
adventure in a paradisiacal environment: the most unknown Mexico.

The greatest arrival of sea turtles is observed from mid-June to February. With the largest populations of Olive Ridley turtles, Hawksbill turtles, green turtles and leatherbacks also nest here.

We have two sea turtle conservation programmes:

  • Location in Puerto Escondido: meals are not included (in case you choose the individual modality with meals, please ask our coordinators), but there are common areas for cooking in the volunteer’s house. Daily transportation to the programme is covered.
  • Location on the Oaxaca Coast: includes meals and coordinated bus transportation to the programme. Consists of formed groups that arrive on stipulated dates. These groups are dedicated to conservation, ecotourism and sustainable development of their communities. They carry out activities such as: Protecting sea turtles, planting trees in the jungle, monitoring marine fauna by boat, environmental education workshops, beach clean-ups, etc. In group volunteering we follow an itinerary, which depends on the dates and the biological and social cycles, as well as the natural conditions, so it is orientative.

Your coordinator in both programmes will indicate the activities that you will have to carry out depending on the season you go, according to the existing and priority needs of volunteering with turtles in Mexico:

  • Preparation of sand for the creation of nurseries
  • Beach cleaning
  • Night work such as: Patrols on the beach where turtles nest.
  • Protection of the female turtles. When patrols are carried out and you see a turtle arriving on the beach, the patrolling group should wait without making as little noise as possible, and wait for the sea turtle to begin the process of laying eggs and then proceed to take measurements, identify the type of turtle species and relocate the eggs to the hatchery.
  • Both volunteers and local staff must monitor and care for the nests in the hatchery.
  • In case of hatching, the hatchlings are released on the beach.
  • During the day, all volunteers and local staff carry out activities and maintenance tasks on the beach, in the village and in the area where the project takes place.
  • Organic gardening or mangrove reforestation activities.
  • Environmental education
  • Scientific ringing

In group volunteering, the next dates are:

  • From 26 September to 10 October (special women’s healing).
  • 25 October to 8 November (special day of the dead).
  • 24 November to 8 December (whale season).
  • 23 January to 6 February (whale season).

For the individual volunteer, the programme is open all year round. It is recommended that the volunteer arrives during the weekend for an induction beforehand. November to December is the most expensive time due to the Laud season.

In both projects there is a timetable of approximately 3 or 4 hours spread over the day, afternoon and evening, with days off to be arranged with the local coordinator.

  • Minimum age: 18
  • Maximum age: None
  • Copy of CV required: No
